High Above Pacifica: Beach Portraits with Kaya and Guiness

What a spectacular San Francisco dog photography session I had in April - that was actually in Pacifica, CA (just a few minutes south of San Francisco). My client has two amazing and handsome dogs that she features on her Instagram page. Even though these dogs get photographed by their humans constantly, my client really wanted an outside perspective, someone who could observe this beautiful family unit and articulate the love that was so present and so strong. I always tell clients that my job as an artist is to turn the mirror around on their relationships, so when my client hired me to do exactly that I was really excited to get to work. Thankfully ‘getting to work’ often means putting on sunscreen and hiking boots which is a pretty nice way to spend a working weekend.

We met at Mori Point in Pacifica, CA (literally 15min south of San Francisco) and took a hike that my client does with her dogs nearly every day. It was a slow climb uphill to an amazing plateau high above the Pacifica shore. We had the perfect combination of cloud coverage and sunshine, and as we walked I steered our group toward a few particularly beautiful nooks and crannies off the trail. Once there, I simply let everyone be themselves and do what they wanted to do. By very gently wrangling dogs and people, I’m able to say to them (without words) - “I’m giving you permission to simply be yourselves.” After a few minutes of clients wondering whether or not I’m going to tell them where to stand and how to pose (which I never do, obviously) they always figure out that they’re already doing exactly what I want them to do - just be. For this frenetic group (Guiness is an enormous puppy and Kaya is an insanely smart working dog) it took a little extra silent wrangling to get everyone to settle in, but all that subtle maneuvering was completely worth it. These portraits are full of light and texture and love and presence and closeness and relationships and just the right amount of chaos. I just love them.
